Food Allergies: 101
Delayed type food allergies are more common than you think. In fact, a majority of people experience food intolerance and simply aren’t aware of it. In fact, one of the most common symptoms of an un-diagnosed food allergy or sensitivity is fatigue.
However, most people are not aware of this. Individuals can be allergic to a wide variety of different foods, but an overwhelming majority of these allergies are in response to a small number of foods. So what are some common food allergies? What are some symptoms that you may have an un-diagnosed food allergy?
Common Food Allergies
People can be allergic to a wide variety of things. However, there are a few foods that are more common for food allergies. In fact, around 90% of food allergies concern 8 specific allergens: peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat, nuts, soy, shellfish, and fish. Here are some common food allergies.
Peanuts are among the most common allergens, and are also among the most dangerous. This is probably one of the most common food allergies. In fact the number of children who suffer from a peanut allergy has more than tripled in the U.S. over the last 15 years.
Peanut allergies can trigger a dangerous anaphylaxis reaction that can be potentially fatal. While a majority of peanut allergies last for life, around a fifth of children with peanut allergies eventually outgrow the condition.
2. Tree Nuts
Tree Nut allergy is a condition which can be passed on genetically. Additionally tree nut allergies are more persistent than peanut allergies. Only around 9% of children who suffer from tree nut allergies eventually outgrow their condition.
There is a wide variety of tree nut allergens. Such as: hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, pistachio nuts, etc. A person with tree nut allergies does not have to be allergic to all the allergens. There is a high chance of cross-contact between different types of nuts during the manufacturing processes of many products. So in general most people with individual tree nut allergies try to avoid tree nuts altogether.
What is another extremely common allergen. The symptoms presented in the case of a wheat allergy will vary based on the severity of the condition: it can be something mild with symptoms such as rashes, itchiness, soreness, and hives, or it can be something more serious such as anaphylaxis.
It can be pretty difficult to avoid wheat, especially in a western diet.
Symptoms of a Delayed Type Food Allergy
There are many symptoms of delayed type food allergies or food sensitivities. Many of them are commonly experienced by most people. This include:
- Headaches or Migraines
- Widespread joint or muscle pain
- Many bathroom trips
- Abdominal Pain
These aren’t the only symptoms, but they certainly are the most common. Chronic fatigue is one of the major symptoms of a food allergy, but it is often misdiaognosed. So make sure not to overlook the possibility that these symptoms could be caused by a food allergy.
