Valentines Day Sweet Tooth!


Will you be reading the nutritional facts on your food labels this Valentines Day?
You may have many times before but have you ever noticed that there is no daily value percentage for sugar? When researching this topic, no definitive answer came up for this but it’s safe to assume that there is no nutritional value to sugar.

The American Heart Association recommends men to limit their sugar intake to 36 grams, or 9 teaspoons, per day. Women should limit added sugar to 24 grams, or 6 teaspoons, each day. The World Health Organization guidelines recommend adults and children need to reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake.

A further reduction to below 5% or roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits. It is also recommended to limiting soft drinks to 36 ounces a week because it is proven that more weight gain comes from these then solid foods alone. These limits are only pertain to added sugars and not naturally occurring sugars that are in items such as fruit.

The average American consumes 21 teaspoons, or 84 grams, of sugar daily though; far more than recommended.
Even if you think this doesn’t apply to you, you probably consume well over your recommended daily sugar intake. Most people consume more than their daily amount in just one sitting. How much sugar will you be consuming this Valentines Day?
